   Soundtrack Review

Music Review.

Aside from being sold at outrageous prices on eBay and at any other places or forums on the net, Final Fantasy VI Piano Collections is a pretty decent CD, nothing new, just only good ol' school Final Fantasy style that we're accustomed to until the later Final Fantasy installments, excluding Nobuo Uematsu "mea culpa" with his new Final Fantasy IX music that returns to the old style that almost everyone loves.

All the main themes of Final Fantasy VI are on this CD: Cefca, Stragus, Terra, and the mysterious Gau. Without hesitation, the best theme on this CD is "Kids Run Through the City Corners" - the main town theme in Final Fantasy VI. The slow moving, peaceful arrangements found here give the impression of a small town where everyone knows everyone which translates the impression that the FF6 town gives... "peaceful 'till the characters come in."

The theme entitled "Johnny C Bad" with its lively arrangements reminds me of the music that you hear when you are listening to some old Westerns when the hero or the bad guy enters the saloon and looks around at the people playing poker or chatting at the bar listening to the somewhat crazy piano piece that is playing.

The overall smooth and soothing Terra's theme is a good introduction for this CD because it's not too extreme and allows the listener to smoothly slip into the overall mood of the album. Good slow moving yet very interesting pieces after pieces of piano that may bring back images from your memory when you played the game. For instance, Cefka's theme reminds me of the very beginning of the game when he arrives at Figaro castle whining about having sand in his boots.

But even if this CD is great, it still has a major drawback. The track "Spinach Rag" coming out of nowhere completely ruins the mood that the Cefka theme with its fast and overall speedy arrangements put in. "Spinach Rag" just comes and cool down the atmosphere, then with the rather lively introduction of "Stragus theme" the mood is up and away again for a short amount of time.

At the finish line, Final Fantasy VI Piano Collections is a very good CD which shows that Nobuo Uematsu's piano arrangement comes a long way back from FFIV PC. I'm not saying that FFIV PC is boring but the piano play is way better in FFVI PC because of the "experience" gained from the making of FFIV and FFV PC. I definitely recommend to you FF VI PC as it's a masterpiece that's worth it.
