It's hard to believe that Phoenix Genesis has been online for over a
month already. Time sure does fly! Currently, the site houses
778 game titles,
193 anime titles, and
49 J-Pop titles
making a total of 1020 music CDs in our library.
Please be aware that new titles are constantly trickling in,
so check the coming soon
directory for anticipated music.
I have spent the last month making this site as easy to navigate as
possible and will give a quick overview of how it work. For updates
to our music library, please reference the
New Items and
Coming Soon pages. For update dates
and new sections, use our handy Quik Guide
page. To easily search a section of the site by category, use our
pulldown menus on our Updates page. For
quick site update info., check out our
Open Discussion Forum. I have been working daily to add something
new to the site, regardless of how small.
Well, we've been dancing in anticipation over this launch, so of
course the rain gods took this as a hint and it downpoured all day
long. But that did not deter the Phoenix Genesis staff from walking
a mile to our local Electronics Boutique at 5 in the morning to be
the first in line to grab our PS2. I have to admit that I was rather
sceptical at first over the alleged power of this next gen system,
but once I got the controller in my hot little hands, I was hooked!
This has to be the most responsive and light controller I have ever
used. And the graphics were simply mind-blowing.
Dave, our senior staff writer, had to pull me away from his PS2
system so he could have a turn at playing all the cool games.
I simply hate football, but Madden NFL 2001 was amazing nevertheless.
It was far superior to any of the sports games on the Dreamcast.
Ridge Racer 5 could have used a prettier model, but the driving
engine was very forgiving. There's a very impressive mode which
showcases the cars and they looked so real. The tracks weren't
all too unique, so I'm holding out until the next Gran Turismo
comes out. Time Splitters is a great first-person shooter. The
controllers were much more impressive than the newly-released
Quake III Arena for the Dreamcast. What was the most impressive
about this PS2 launch title was the music and sound effects.
Smuggler's Run is a rental in my opinion. SSX Snowboarding had
to be my favorite. Nice tricks, great courses, killer soundtrack,
and eye-popping graphics. Couldn't afford Kessen, Tekken, or any
of the other games, but Dave will be renting them and reviewing
them if I can pull him away from his new toy long enough to sit
down and write something for the site.
Well, after we played ourselves into exhaustion, ate all the pizza
we could stomach, and took a much needed nap, I began my demented
experiments on the PS2. Plopped in Enemy of the State for our DVD
test only to find that I was denied Parental Access! Once I entered
the secret password, it was time to sit back with the popcorn. I
will never use my PC DVD player again as this one was so much simpler
to use. Next test was for the CD audio player. For this monumental
occasion, I burned none other than the Ridge Racer 5 Soundtrack. The
PS2 played the CDR with no problem although the music player controls
were rather annoying compared to the original Playstation. So, I'll
still be using my original PSX to play music.
Finally, we threw in a few original PSX games to verify increased
load times and improved graphics capabilities. Crash Bandicoot was
more fun than ever with the improved D-Pad response. Vagrant Story
was really cleaned up graphically thanks to the new system as was
Metal Gear Solid. My only complaint with the PS2 is that it does
tend to overheat, so rush out and buy that vertical stand ASAP.
Enough said, glad I preordered this monster back in May. Now I just
have to go and pick up my system tomorrow and pray that MGS 2 comes
out sooner than anticipated.
Well, a static site is a boring site, so I've done my best to make
Phoenix Genesis as interactive as possible. I have added a hit
counter, guestbook, open discussion forum, a fun quizlet, a survey,
and some mini-games to play and download. Eventually, I will throw up
a chat room when I have the energy. So, play around with the site and
download some free goodies. If you're interested in participating in
our Retro Attic, drop us an email so
we can set up an interview. Also, if you've missed any past news,
you can click on the archive link below and view our past news stories.
Keep coming back for more while I take a break and play some more PS2!
