METAL GEAR SOLID OST - MUSIC REVIEW
by Guillaume Hebert   isolder@videotron.ca

Well, what can I say about Metal Gear Solid? Aside of the fact that this is one of the few Playstation games that kept me awake until the next morning from the day I got it. None of the Final Fantasy games ever succeeded in having that kind of effect on me. Now, I hear a lot of people saying, "He's crazy, it can't happen, NEVER spent a whole night on a FF Game." Well, it's possible and Metal Gear Solid is a reminder that not only RPGs a FPS network oriented gaming can get you hooked up.

Basically a "hide and seek" game, the bgm is very important toward setting the "atmosphere" in Metal Gear Solid. And let's say that Konami in its ever-present effort does deliver the goods well over expectations. Rikka Muranaka (the composer) really know how to create a stressful and challenging bgm.

Not having played the two "original" NES games (shoot'em up like 1943 and Life Force where just too good at the time), I cannot judge either the bgm or the game itself against its older NES counterpart, but the slow moving MGS bgm like "Intruder I, II, III" can really slowly put you to sleep, and them you become sloppy, taking risks, far too many risks. Then, like a alarm clock after a good night worth of play, "Encounter" along with some heavily armed baddies are hot on your tail. The best part is that you only have few bullets left in that little automatic "light" pistol... with no extra magazines.

Track eighteen, "The best is yet to come", with its soft arrangements of pan pipe and guitar along with a very good vocal, does a clear break from the rest of the album. And, after all that stress, this soothing piece is most welcome. The two last pieces of the album are the E3 remix that let every mind go crazy about that game and a remix that, if you like the style, is very good. So another masterpiece to add to the Konami tab, they deserve it. Thanks, guys, for such a great game and bgm.
