   PS2 Review and Images

Coming this October is Sony's follow up to their immensely successful Playstation home gaming system, the Playstation 2 (a.k.a., PS2). Announced at last year's E3 Expo in Los Angeles, California, Sony unveiled this powerful piece of hardware to the hordes of eager gamers worldwide. This 128-bit console monster continues to wow people with it's impressive lineup of games it has in store for all of us. Hundreds of developers from all over the world are depriving themselves of sleep these days (er, nights) to get acquainted with the PS2 and deliver awesome games (We hope!).

At this year's E3, also held in Los Angeles, Sony finally revealed the price and PS2 launch date. October 26, 2000 is the golden day to play the next gen games on their console. "So how much is it?" you ask. Early reports had the system at some $500 price point, but Sony quieted those sayers by locking the price at $299.99 around the time of this year's E3 Expo.

Summoner Profile

Now this price might be a little steep for some, but a next gen console is only one part of the attraction. The PS2 is a DVD-based machine which means that, yes, it can play DVD movies! Unlike the Japanese version which was released earlier this year, you can play the DVD's right out of the box and without a memory card to store the DVD data. In Japan, the DVD market received a big boom in sales after the PS2 was released. Will the same happen here? Seems likely, with the extreme hype that is everywhere nowadays.

And, with the high-capacity data storage capabilities of a DVD-driven system, perhaps it won't be long before all games are released simultaneously in English and Japanese, much like DVD movies where one has the option of selecting the language. Just think, there would be no delay in domestic imports and no need to modify your console to play the games the Japanese intended them to be played! Also, there would be room on the DVD for such extras as mp3 samples of the music (to plug the game-based soundtrack), art galleries, links to the developer's website, "making of" interviews, and an official strategy guide. Hmmm... all your gaming needs on one little disc. Hey, Squaresoft and Sony, I hope you're reading this. Hint! Hint!

Fifa Soccer 2001 Profile

Sony hopes to make the PS2 the center of entertainment in your home come this October and well beyond. With all the highest connections to the likes of Firewire, USB ports etc., its easy to see this happening in the very near future. But the real question is, what games will be available at launch and beyond??? As of this writing, Sony has yet to release an official game list for the imminent October 26th event, but we here at Phoenix Genesis went on a retrieval mission and found, if anything, a tentative list of launch games that should wet your whistle. But be warned that these game dates could change at any moment without notice unfortunately.

Welcome to the world of video games! -- db
