SSX Snowboarding
Best game. Lots of tricks, great tracks, graphically amazing, killer
soundtrack, cinematic replay mode, just plain fun, interesting
characters, tons of stuff to constantly unlock. A real showcase
game for the PS2's capabilities. Lots of replay value. |

Madden NFL 2001
Best football game out there. Extremely realistic. Lots of
replay value. Better than any Dreamcast sports' titles. |

Fantavision
Super fast puzzle game, graphics showcase the PS2 capabilities,
interesting music, great levels (you can play in outer space), hey -
it's a pyrotechnic display, great replay mode (can change the mood,
weather, camera angle, etc. There's a mode which makes the fireworks
look like you're on acid). A real party game. |

Ridge Racer V
Plus: It's another Ridge Racer game. Very forgiving driving engine
(plays like an arcade game), great cars (love the showcase room mode),
awesome soundtrack. Downside: the model is sleezy, the graphics are
jagged, the tracks uninteresting, Gran Turismo will be better. |
 |
|
05 |
Time Splitters
Plus: Incredible sound effects, superior movement (the L3 and R3 sticks
work nicely together), great music, interesting levels. Play through
many historical time periods, including the future. Downside: It's
another shooter, creatures look like Resident Evil clones, the
levels are way too short and easy. Quake III Arena for Dreamcast is
graphically more interesting. |

06 |
Smuggler's Run
Plus: Unlike Driver, you can actually run over people, the all-terrain
vehicle drives over and through anything, you can go five miles in any
direction. You get to perform illegal smuggling. Downside: gets boring
after awhile. Graphics clean, but not inspiring. Playing with my Hot
Wheels cars on my living room floor is more fun. Definitely a rental
game. |

Orphen: Scion of Sorcery
Worst game. Bad Saturday morning TV animation, hurts-my-ears
voice acting, slow-paced story, cookie-cutter
characters, first-generation graphics, horrible battle system (how
dare they compared this to Panzer Saga!), boring "yawn" spells,
uninteresting backgrounds (rotating the camera 360 degrees reveals
all the rooms, so why even bother exploring them), puts-me-to-sleep
gameplay. If this were a rental, I would ask for a full refund.

08 |
Midnight Club
Plus: Two huge cities to cruise in. Get to race against other
car clubs on city streets and win their cars. Downside: Not as
graphically impressive as Ridge Racer 5 or Gran Turismo 3.
Squaresoft's import high speeding racing RPG, Racing Lagoon,
executes a similar concept far better. Definite rental game.

 |
|
09 |
Summoner
Plus: It's the only RPG at launch other than the disappointing
Ever Grace and Eternal Ring. Downside: Too much reading, looks too
much like a PC game, doesn't have the gameplay of a Zelda or Final
Fantasy title. Rent it until Dark Cloud or Oni hit the PS2.

Kessen
Plus: Get to strategically control Feudal Japanese armies. When
you win the game, you get the play as the opposing army. Nice
orchestrated soundtrack, but not as powerful as the Braveheart
score. Jaw-dropping CG, interesting characters, can choose to
view close-up action during battle sequences. Downside: zero
bloodshed makes for unrealistic warfare. Stay away if you dislike
strategy games.

|
11 |
Tekken Tag Tournament
Plus: It's another Tekken game! Possibly the best fighting game ever,
surpassing Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast. Great techno sounding music.
Lots of interesting combos and characters (you can even play as a
panda bear!). Graphically amazing, backgrounds intergrate nicely
with fighting. Smooth controls. Downside: Combos require skill,
nothing new added to the Tekken series. A must have for the fans
of this series.
