The E3 Expo showcases the hottest players in electronic gaming
from around the world including Nintendo, Sega, Sony, Microsoft,
Squaresoft, and of course Electronic Arts who hosts the three-day
event in Los Angeles. Every year, one company is poised to take
the lead over the pack. Last year it was Sega with their new
Dreamcast next gen system. Sony intended to trample their
competition by unveiling the PS2 in playable form to American
gamers. So did Sony monopolize
First of all, as usual, Nintendo had their space at E3 covered in
the likes of the one and only Pokemon. But there were other games to
get really excited about too. "Perfect Dark" was playable and much fun
while Mario Tennis also had everyone's attention. Nintendo's free bar
was a nice touch to the expo. The gimmick behind it was the much
anticipated "Conker's Bad Fur Day". There were rolling demo's of the
game and a couple playable versions as well. Unfortunately, there was
no Game Cube (formerly known as the "Dolphin") or Game Boy Advanced
unveiled so everyone had to wait until Spaceworld in August. ( And am I
the only one who thinks that their Game Cube looks suspicously like
a futuristic toaster? Hmmm... ed. )
The projected winner of E3, Sony, showcased their upcoming
PS2 along

On the other side of the L.A. Convention Center there was the
rather impressive Sega booth. You knew something was happening
here with the loud music, dancers and cool entrance to their
exhibit with a futuristic immense tube. Sega had some online
games going along with tons of Dreamcast console games. They
had a stage with loud rockin' funk music accompanied by the
Space Channel 5 woman dancing on high platforms. Take a peek
at our Anime Expo 2000 page for
some related pics.
For a company that everyone says is already dead from the
forthcoming release of Sony's PS2, you sure as heck wouldn't know
it here!! I give a lot of special props to Sega for not bowing
down to the pressure that everyone has been dealing them. Even
though they have the weakest next-gen system by comparison to the
other companies, there is something to be said for giving it your
all and placing originality first in games. Just check out "Ecco
the Dophin: Defender of the Future" or the upcoming "Shenmue" if
you don't believe me.
My winner for the most impressive booth at E3 would have to be
Sega's with their vibrate showing on the floor. You can really
tell that they want to stay competitive in this important home
entertainment race. As a gamer, it means a lot to me to see that
a company is willing to go so far out of their way to get my
interest in their system and games. And, best of all,
their prices can't be beat!
